Terrell residents received a cold gift on Christmas Day — snow.A winter storm rolled through North Texas on Dec. 25, blanketing much of the region in ice and snow.
Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service showed nearby Wills Point received 2.5 inches of snow and Royse City received 3.5 inches.
However, NWS meteorologist Ted Ryan said while there were reports of about 2 inches of snow in the Lake Tawakoni region, the Terrell area received less of the white stuff.
“Mesquite received only a dusting, and it looks like Terrell received just over an inch,” he said.
Ryan said the last time Terrell had snow on Christmas Day was in 2009, when the area received “just under an inch.”
The weather made the holiday all the more special for the Terrell community.
Kane Aldinger, of Colorado, was in town with his family visiting his parents, Tom and Nancy Aldinger.
He and his son, Jonah, 5, spent part of Wednesday afternoon building a snowman in his parents’ front yard.
“[Jonah] was wondering why we didn’t bring the sleds,” Kane said. “We didn’t know it was going to snow [here].
“We’ll take the credit for bringing it with us [from Colorado],” he joked.
Terrell resident Loryn Thomas and her daughter, Jessica Timons, 17, spent time in Flower Mound with Thomas’s parents, Karl and Marty Drescher, who gifted Timons, a junior at Terrell High School, with a Chevrolet HHR.
“They told her when she started driver’s [education] in the summer that they would get her a car, but I think it was surreal for her to realize she actually got it,” Thomas said about the gift. “But she’ll have to keep her grades up to keep it.”
The planned daylong trip was cut short because of the snow, but Thomas said the weather didn’t put a damper on the day.
“It was so cool. I remember it snowing a few years ago, but this was the first time I can remember when it truly snowed on Christmas Day,” Thomas said.eived a cold gift on Christmas Day — snow.
